Winter Leagues Preview Group D
Posted on 2 Jan '26 at 20:47 by Gary Ryan

Last but not least we preview Group D. Before I get into introducing all the teams and players I would just like to wish every team the best of luck this week and all of the upcoming weeks.

Johnny Price, Paul County, Michael Byrne and Roisin Harpur.

Last years champions the Dream Team will be out to retain their crown this year again. The team maintains the same quartet and is spearheaded by Johnny ‘'The Legend'' Price, this man is a two time Dublin champion in the 90's winning a Matchplay along with a strokeplay a few years later. Anyone playing in the one slot will have their hands full with Johnny. Paul has been a steady improver since joining Lucan around 10 years ago now. Paul's 1st win as a member of Lucan actually came in the form of the Club Handicap Matchplay, a pretty impressive way to make a name for yourself amongst your fellow players. El Capitano Michael Byrne is the 3rd player on the Dream Team. 2025 Dublin Matchplay Champion and 2025 Club Foursomes champion. Michael will be very difficult to beat but in that 3rd Slot he will have to give plenty of shots away each week. Roisin is the final player on the Dream Team, a 2023 club strokeplay winner Roisin will be a very hard game for anyone and she will be hoping she can add a few scalps to her collection.

Sean Dillon, Seamus McCormick, Roma McCormick, Helen Dunne.

A dark horse team in Group D could be the Knee Knockers. Sean Dillon 2007 Dublin Strokeplay Champion will be the front man for this team and being in the one slot he will have some very difficult matches but no better man to rise to the challenge. Seamus has plenty of Winter League experience and with his handicap will cause many a player nightmares throughout this competition. Roma along with husband Seamus has plenty of experience in the Winter Leagues. Roma got a late season win this year and will be in slot 3 which has the possibility of getting plenty of Scalps. Helen has joined up with this team and she will be looking to make a strong winning impression in her Debut Season for the Knee Knockers.

Tom McMorrow, Joe Murphy, Noel Leonard and Brenda Purcell

Group Favourites maybe. With the 2024 National Strokeplay champion Tom Mcmorrow spearheading this team you would have to give this team a very strong chance of coming out on top. Tom is also a 5 time winner of the Club Strokeplay so when it comes to pressure moments he is a man you will want on your side. Joe is a multiple winner of the Winter leagues over the years and Jammy Joe as he is known to some will never be out of a match. Joe over the years has been a prolific winner, in majors and normal weekend competitions Joe is always a man who can pull out some great rounds so anyone who is matched up against Mr Murphy will need to be on form to get the win. Noel is in the number 3 slot and like Joe is also a two time winner of the Winter Leagues along with a pair of wins in the Club Mixed foursomes and win in the old Club Fourball competition so matchplay form is definitely there. If you are in the number 3 slot you have one hell of a match on your hands going up against Noel. Last but not least is the 2nd National Champion on the Murphs Brenda Purcell. Brenda is one of Lucans most decorated Lady members winning 3 Dublin Championships along with her National Strokeplay. Brenda is a seriously good matchplayer with multiple Singles and Doubles finals won anyone not on their game coming up against Brenda will be in serious trouble.

Dave Lee, Fergal Power, Sandra Keogh and Tess Donavan.

Go go Power Rangers!!!. Runners up in 2024 will be looking to go one better here. Dave Lee is a former Winter League winner and also a 2 time Dublin Matchplay Champion. Dave is also a 3 time Player of the Year so going up against this man you need to have your A game. Fergal Power another Runner up in this competition is one of the more consistent players even though it may not show in his wins. Fergal is always a man capable of shooting the low score but he will have to carry over his strong scoring ability to matchplay to help get the Power Rangers over the line. Sandra Keogh Leinster and Dublin Strokeplay champion aswell as 2 time Dublin Matchplay Champion. Another lady who is in the top of the class when it comes to Lucan's best lady players as she has proven on many occasions. Sandra never gives up in a match and can strike from anywhere as she has proved in multiple club finals over the years. Tess Donavan winner of 2 Winter League and also 2 Remembrance victories which were back to back is the final member of the Power Rangers.

Philo Condron, Dave Hayden II, Matthew Finlay and Jay Condron.

Who's the New Guy. The Tractormen have been a regular team with maybe one new face added now and again but over the years have been a fantastic team. What can you say about this woman the lady who leads this team other than she is one of the greats, Philo Condron has been there and more than likely won it. Arguably Lucan's finest female player of all time Philo has won it all in the club and plenty outside too with 4 Dublin Championships 2 Leinsters and a National Singles win in her locker along with Dublin Intercounty medals this lady has done it all and in a group that has multiple national champions in it would anyone like to come up against her. Dave Hayden II another dual Dublin Champion along with his sole Leinster Championship win in 2010. Dave has always been a very good matchplayer and will be a difficult game for anyone he comes up against. 2025 Player of the Year Matt Finlay has joined this team for his first foray into the Winter Leagues. What a year for this man as he took home the title of Player of the Year and he was also a member of the Lucan Team which reached the Semi Final of the National Inter Club (even though he doesn't know the format of Scotch Foursomes). Last member of this team is Jay Condron. Dublin Gents Matchplay winner of 2017, Winter League winner and also a member of Lucan's dominant Junior League team which won multiple Dublin Leagues. Not played as much recently but will definitely be glad bunkers are out of play.

Group D prediction by Gary Ryan

This is one hell of a group. We have some of the best lady players in the club playing in this group and I can guarantee a few scalps will be coming. To have a group with as many championships as this just makes for a great contest and I think all matches in this group will have great games. To pick a favourite in this group is near impossible as I see 3 teams who could all be favourites along with the other two teams very capable of beating any of those 3 favourites. The Murphs for me are just going to pip the top spot. I think the other 4 teams are all capable of getting the 2nd qualifying spot but to make a selection the Dream team and the Tractormen will fight it out for that 2nd Place. On a side note one man has his hands full and that will be Jay Condron who has a full fixture list of ladies to play against and there might not be much left of his scalp after they are finished with him.

Prediction

1. Murphs

2. Tractormen

3. Dream Team

4. Power Rangers

5. Knee Knockers
